You can catch a glimpse of this summer's shoots (that have already been posted) over on Facebook...and half a dozen more to come both here and there!

Loved meeting this family and spending some time in our crazy warm summer days...celebrated Evan's first birthday with a shoot with his parents, grandparents, and sweet cousin!

He is one lucky little man to have so many who love him dearly! :)

A few of my favorites from the shoot...cannot wait to share the rest with them!
THE GRAND PRIZE
If you don't win the grand prize, you could still win second prize: a $250 gift certificate to Finian Road or third prize: a $100 gift certificate to Finian Road!
With the exception of the cure for cancer, I can't think of a sweeter deal.
Tickets are $25 each, and there are just 125 tickets available. Great odds for a prize package worth $850!

Did you know that November is National Adoption Month in the United States? Now you do!

It's no coincidence of the timing of one of my most favorite moments as a photographer...and I just had to share.

A while back, I was asked if I could shoot some "updated photos" for a very special couple who were looking to adopt a baby. Being an adopted child, I was thrilled to help. And as a graphic designer, overjoyed to be able to help layout the 'preview album' for prospective birthmoms to look through...to help them get to know this amazing couple. They selected photos of their life and I laid it out for them to help tell the story of who they are and why they would be great parents.

I'm thrilled to share that in less than two months, they will be welcoming a sweet little boy into their family!

When they met the birthmom of their son, they asked her what helped her make the decision that they were "THE" parents. She handed them the album, turned to the last page, and said, "This image. I can see you walking along, hand in hand, with your child."

I give you the image above from the last page of their album, taken on our farm, by two of the world's best parents-to-be. I can't begin to describe how happy my heart is to be able to be part of this journey and to be able to capture it as a photographer.

And I cannot wait to welcome this little one as well...with tears, open arms, and of course, my lens. ♥ ♥ ♥shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12950999867586813355noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1704213371466439893.post-56031904339945115162011-07-27T15:34:00.000-07:002011-07-27T15:34:57.870-07:00Sweet Evelyn at One YearHow can Miss Evelyn be a year old already? It seriously feels like it was just yesterday that we were shooting her mama's beautiful maternity images. To celebrate her one year, we shot down at Pt. Defiance and the Rose Garden.

To Evelyn's signature plan, her parents added the maternity shoot + an 18 month shoot, so her Signature album will be extended to add in the finest from each shoot. I can't wait to pull it all together -- I just have to wait 6 more months!

A few of my favorites...be prepared to be captivated by her blue eyes!
Time was of the essence as he was scheduled to deploy to the middle east a few short days later...and we pulled it off!

We spent an hour on the farm with their two beautiful wee ones before he left. One of the things I adore about where I live is that because we have the lower fields without trees, you'd never know we were shooting on a Christmas tree farm! You can capture some fabulous northwest images with dozens of different backdrops and beautiful light.

I LOVE coming back to shooting with a family like this. I'm so grateful for the chance to be able to shoot them together before he left!
Becky and Dave have four grown boys, and it would be the chance to capture *everyone* together...even the next (third) generation of Callon.

We shot down at St. Martin's University, which holds a very special place in the Callon family's heart. It was the perfect combination of images to capture family with the outtakes that make this family who they are. :)

I loved the images that Becky selected to have enlarged to the 16x20 gallery wraps. One of the whole gang, and one of the guys together. There's a few images of how they turned out a the bottom.

A few of my favorites from the shoot...
One of the images selected for the gallery wrap. You can see a bit of the texture in the wrap. I love that the image extends all the way through the sides + top + bottom. You can see in the photo beneath how it truly 'wraps' all the way around. :)
So excited to see who wins this year...and what images they select for their own gallery wraps!
Want to have a chance at winning the 2011 Shoot to Fight Cancer? The deadline is coming up quickly...this Saturday, April 30th! All the details are here! :)shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12950999867586813355noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1704213371466439893.post-55309953184454518022011-04-22T14:22:00.000-07:002011-04-22T14:22:23.369-07:002011 Pricing Updates + NewsA few quick Finian Road updates as we enter a month-long maternity leave for Finian Road.

First and foremost, I'll be "on the down low" for the first two weeks after the Wee Ski 2.0 is born (estimated arrival is on May 1). I have several ongoing design projects that will continue, but those clients are well aware of the changes to project delivery during that time. :)

In preparing for the leave, we had a major shoot blitz in April to make sure all my Finian Road Signature babies were taken care of (11 shoots over 3 weeks time!), while giving me time to get everyone's shoots edited and delivered. I have just a few shoots remaining to deliver. So glad I planned for time both before and after he is born!

Please feel free to contact me during my leave, should you have any questions or are looking to book a shoot...but just be patient that time turnarounds for responses via email or phone may be delayed a bit. :)

Finian Road's pricing hasn't changed in two years, but it is changing as my work/life balance changes a bit. Beginning May 1st, pricing will be adjusted based on the distance from Finian Road's "local shooting area". Essentially, further distances for shooting will have a higher price than shoots located more centrally to Thurston/Pierce County. It mainly affects both the individual shoot price (currently a flat $450 per shoot) and the multi-shoot plan options (ranging from $800-$1250).

There are two brochures which illustrate the new pricing, effective May 1, 2011. Clicking on either image will bring you to a printable PDF with all the details.

Current pricing remains in effect until May 1 -- so if you are a client who is a bit "further away" (in Grays Harbor, Mason, Kitsap, King, Snohomish or Island County), you can book and prepay a shoot (or a multi-shoot plan) at the current rates and avoid the price increases that will take effect on May 1.

Individual Shoot | $450 + tax

Simplicity Plan | $800 + tax

Signature Plan | $1250 + tax

Shoots can be scheduled at your convenience after I return from maternity leave, but the pre-May 1st pricing will be in effect for all booking/prepayments.

Questions? Just shoot me an email! :)

Finally, we have just 8 days to go until the 2011 Shoot to Fight Cancer drawing! Details can be found here, and tickets are available until the 30th or until we sell out. We've sold nearly $1000 of tickets so far, so don't miss your chance to win one of 3 fabulous prizes!shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12950999867586813355noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1704213371466439893.post-61476493300268051642011-04-20T04:52:00.000-07:002011-04-20T04:52:00.716-07:00Ariana & GibsonThese little ones are growing up so quickly...it feels like just yesterday I was shooting Ariana as a five-day-old! And especially fun that this was my last newborn before my own newborn is due in a few short days!

I've shot the oldest, Siri, since she was 3 months old, and she just celebrated her 5th birthday. Such a blessing to be part of their world!
Loving this shoot from the Woodland Creek Park in Lacey...with the lake in the background and the sweet playground to finish things off.

As my own family prepares to grow to four with two little ones underfoot...I love seeing how other fams with two wee ones pull it off. Lots of flexibility + a great sense of humor seem to be the ticket! :)
Malachi is just over three, and this is Samara's nine month shoot...I love to see their personalities develop, their grins become their own, and there's nothing better than a big bear hug from a three-year-old after the shoot, saying "thanks!"
She came down to the farm for her nine month shoot...and I love any little girl who can rock the blues. How beautiful is she here?!?

And just for the record, she's wearing an AWESOME hand-knitted headband here. I'd reveal the designer, but I don't want to create a crazy demand for his or her products. I. LOVE. HOW. IT. TURNED. OUT.
Judi wanted to surprise her sister, Laurie, as she celebrated a milestone birthday (21? 30? I'll never tell...). Last summer, we started planning the shoot...only to have it come together during one of the craziest, wettest (6"+ inches in the single month of March alone) months of late.

When one of your favorite clients refers you to people she knows and loves...you always know you'll love them too. And I did!

It all came together beautifully...the skies opened up to a bit of clearing just as we began, and it resumed pouring as I drove away. The ladies were joined by their brother Terry, so we were able to capture all the siblings together as well.

As much as I love shooting wee ones, I found myself laughing much more during this shoot than while chasing around 3 foot tall tiny persons! So much fun to shoot them together.

We headed to the Bridge of Glass, ended up down by the Museum and finished off on the beach at the Thea Foss Waterway.

A handful of my favorites...

Our Relay For Life team (Connolly Tacon & Meserve: "Connolly's Crew") is off to a fabulous start -- with funds that I mailed off a few days ago, we're just shy of $20,000 in funds raised!

For the last three years, I have donated a photo shoot from Finian Road and raffled it off to benefit the American Cancer Society. More than $5000 has been raised from the tickets sold for the Shoot to Fight Cancer.

I introduce this year's Shoot to Fight Cancer.

A photo shoot with your fam from Finian Road + the digital negatives + two beautiful gallery-wrapped 16x20 canvas of your two favorite images from the shoot...all while fighting cancer at the same time!

And this year, the new addition to the prizes are the addition of a second prize and third prize -- so there will be 3 winners this year! The second prize winner wins a $250 gift certificate to Finian Road, and the third prize winner wins a $100 gift certificate to Finian Road!

With the exception of the cure for cancer, I can't think of a sweeter deal.

Tickets are $25 each, and there are just 125 tickets available. Great odds for a prize package worth $850!

100% of every dollar from every ticket goes to support the life-saving work of the American Cancer Society...saving lives and creating more birthdays by helping you stay well, helping you get well, finding cures and by fighting back.

You can use the shoot yourself, or give it away as a gift (and you would be the best gift giver EVER!).

Here's how to buy your tickets:

Go to our online website for the Relay For Life. You'll see a very cute video of the Wee Ski showing off his Grand Club shirt at a Relay Regional Summit last fall.

Click on the blue "donate" button under our names.

Enter the amount you wish to donate under "select gift amount": $100 buys you 4 tickets, $75 buys you three tickets, $50 buys you two tickets, and $25 buys you 1 ticket. And you can always buy more than 4!

Follow the prompts to complete your donation to the American Cancer Society.

We will receive a notice that your donation has been made and your ticket stub(s) will be in the mail to you within 48 hours. It will go to the billing address for the credit card used to pay for the ticket.

Our goal is to sell out the tickets before the end of the month...so don't miss your chance to pick up your tickets!

Also sweet to note -- each ticket has a coupon for 15% off a Finian Road shoot or product, good through August 31, 2011! So really...every ticket wins something! :)

The drawing will be held on Saturday, April 30th at 6:00 pm, Pacific time. The winner will be announced on the blog that evening, just after drawing.

Good luck! shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12950999867586813355noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1704213371466439893.post-79846337125932790712011-03-15T13:42:00.000-07:002011-03-15T13:42:08.121-07:00Design | Invitations + Thank You PostcardsWe're in the crazy last few days before the 2011 Blarney Blast...and I realized that I never blogged the design pieces from the 2010 Blast!

Finian Road has always been an avid supporter of the American Cancer Society, so being able to design the printed pieces for a fundraising celebration is always a treat! Last year, our Relay For Life team wanted to have a fun gathering where we could celebrate one of the partners of the firm, Jim Connolly, who had been diagnosed with kidney cancer a few months earlier. Combining his Irish heritage + Relay, and the Blarney Blast was born.

The two main printed pieces -- the invite and the thank you -- were designed by Finian Road. Both were postcards with rounded corners. Keeping the size at 4x6 allowed for lower postage rates. We tied in both the corporate logo + the Relay logo into the colors of the invite, and kept the design festive + simple.

After the event itself was an enormous success, we wanted to not only thank those who supported the Blast, but then invite them to the Relay For Life as well. On the 'thank you', we included two specific things: a 'save the date' for the Relay (with date/time) and the link to our fundraising site so our supporters could follow our progress.

We wanted to make sure that our supporters had the Relay's date on their calendars. We designed a "Connolly's Crew" lap that followed the Opening Lap for cancer survivors, and it was one of those poignant times where you were tearing up at the same time you were cheering. Some of my favorite event photos -- ever -- are from the Connolly's Crew lap, where Jim was surrounded with all of his friends and family.
As we are approach the 2011 Blarney Blast this weekend, we will be fighting back in his memory. I'll highlight this year's event + goodies next week, after the Blast!shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12950999867586813355noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1704213371466439893.post-71193795154925717122011-02-23T13:50:00.000-08:002011-02-23T13:50:54.841-08:00Design | Wedding Ensemble by Finian RoadFrom last year...clearly, safe to blog now since everyone has received and attended the event!

The bride chose three colors -- chocolate, pear green and tangerine for the wedding. Her family has a connection to the wheat industry in Washington, so we used a simple wheat motif throughout the ensemble. Clean and uncluttered was the goal...tying in the three colors throughout.

All three pieces had rounded corners (so elegant on printed pieces) and were printed in a matte styling. The main invitation was 5x7, with the two coordinating pieces at 4x6. (And yes, her return address was changed for the blog posting. But it gives you a feel for what it looked like!)

As the wedding was a 'destination wedding' for both families, coming from each side of the state, I designed a brushstroke state of Washington on the map card, highlighting the main route of travel to the wedding itself at Cave B Winery in Quincy. Adding in a simple 'map zoom', it highlighted the neighboring towns to Cave B without cluttering up the overall design.

The ensemble was sent in a chocolate envelope, and tied together with satin ribbon. We all loved how they turned out...here's a glimpse for you!
It's nearly two years later, and we had the chance for a very special shoot with both grandmas, one of whom was visiting from China! We were able to shoot portraits of everyone together (how often does that happen?!?) and then let the boys be boys...climbing the trees, skipping rocks on the beach. A perfectly beautiful winter day in the northwest!
Feels like we were just shooting him as a newborn!
Eemail me at shelley {at} finianroad {dot} com to confirm what giveaway you'd like and where you want it sent! :)shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12950999867586813355noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1704213371466439893.post-83561933197101641342011-01-31T06:19:00.000-08:002011-01-31T06:19:36.064-08:00A Design Giveaway! As the commercial side of Finian Road's design business flourished last year, I started to have an itch to design fun, personal pieces as well. Lots of color, quirky items, more creativity. Stuff that's cute and fun to not only have, but give as well.

This month, I opened Finian Road's online shoppe over at Etsy. To start, I added two pieces to the shoppe -- a cheery to-do list notepad and a set of "Avoiding Ambiguous Food" lunchbox cards. You'll have to read the lunchbox cards description to see how they came about...trust me, whatever I sell, I definitely use too! :)

The notepads each have 50 sheets and are bound at the top. I seriously love checking boxes off. I am a nerd, I know.

Want to know something awesome?

The day the cheery to-do notepad was listed for the first time, it made a treasury of "undiscovered finds" on Etsy! Artsyville highlighted it with other goodies on Etsy.

Speaking of Artsyville, she has absolutely beautiful goodies in her shoppe. What I love to do via design she does by hand...you should check her stuff out as well!

And my favorite tongue-in-cheek "Avoiding Ambiguous Food" lunchbox notes...Jonathan gets one of these each day in his lunch. They're being sold in packs of 25 - perfect for a month's worth of lunches! :)

Sized roughly the size of a baseball card, they're cute and perfect to tuck in with lunches. You could even use them with care packages to bring a smile to the face of someone you love!

And to celebrate the new personal design launch, I'm giving away two goodies!
The winners can pick what they want -- a cheery notepad or a set of lunchbox notes...

Just leave a comment here by Tuesday evening (February 1st) at 6 pm Pacific. Let me know which one you'd want to win...and I'll announce the winners tomorrow night. Good luck!shelleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12950999867586813355noreply@blogger.com27tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1704213371466439893.post-62017318572853501382011-01-28T15:47:00.000-08:002011-01-28T15:47:54.406-08:00A new year, a new grooveSo hard to believe we're almost finished with the first month of 2011!

The last few months of 2010 were a whirlwind...between shoots + design projects + the Christmas tree season, it was a daily battle to stay ahead of the game while working from home with the Wee Ski in tow.

I did several things over the course of the 3rd and 4th quarter of the year to help gain a better grasp on the business for the upcoming year.

Did a full business analysis of Finian Road.

For the year ending 2010, overall business was up 41%.
I transitioned away from Merrill Lynch and had time to develop the business from here (God bless double nap days!). I honestly never believed in 2006 that this would be a feasible venture in terms of truly adding something to the family (as I'm pretty sure I just wanted to be able to expense sweet equipment back in 2006 when I started!). But on the whole, I'm pleased with how the business has grown.
I love my clients -- they've been an incredible source of growth: both for photography and design. And it's easy to say -- when you love the people you're working for, you tend to also love their friends and family when they refer you!

Nearly 60% of my revenue last year was generated from the "design" side of Finian Road Image & Design.
In 2009, design was at 21% of revenue. I realized that I have hardly ever featured any contract or design work here on the blog...and with the significant impact it made on the bottom line this year, I know I should be sharing some of the projects so you can see the depth of what's available through Finian Road. I'll be honest - I love how the design side is growing.

I formed an Advisory Board for Finian Road.

In order to manage the growth of my company successfully, I needed to get a better perspective and gauge of how I'm doing - both in my work (image + design both) and from a business perspective.
I will tell you that I definitely appreciate my finance background in this, and all of my business management classes from the University of Portland. It's the numbers geek balance to my crafty, creative side.

The Advisory Board has been fantastic for feedback on what I need to improve.

better time management

stepping up my communication game (read: getting email under control w/clients, wholesalers and suppliers)

challenging myself to grow behind the lens.

My game plan for 2011

Better management of communication overall.
It's definitely a work in progress, but it's improving! It includes getting all my sessions blogged (I still have a dozen from 2010 that have yet to see the light of day, even though the clients have been delivered their images long ago!) and sharing more about the process and insight into how I do what I do.

Challenging myself behind the lens.
I have completely reworked my post-processing with the help of a few marathon sessions of feedback + coaching. I am loving how it's coming along. And it's only January!

Better time management.
Blocking out specific times in the office, and leaving it in the office when I'm done. A healthy set of boundaries from both sides.

Stretching myself from a business perspective.
For photography, design + nonprofit work. In addition to my commercial design work, I started a semi-personal line of goodies that I'll have up in my Etsy shoppe as a retail outlet. Simply fun stuff for the Type A nerds like myself, mainly. And there's a good chance I'll have a giveaway on some of it soon! (That means: check back!) You're either green + growing or ripe + rotting! I'd rather be on the growing side! :)

AND FINALLY, A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU...
...to all of my current + past clients, as well as those who want to become future clients, I'm adding in a special Valentine's special, available through Feb. 7th.
